It's a Wrap! Women's Soccer-NCAA Division I
Sixty-two of the 288 athletes are highlighted. They come from 104 high schools and play at 90 colleges in 24 conferences. The breadth and depth of these athletes is outstanding. Come and browse!
What is Playing On Sports?
Playing On Sports covers the graduates of 1,000 high schools located in Kansas and Missouri who compete in 11 sports in any of the 1,100 NCAA Division I, II, or III colleges and universities.
Our best athletes go on to play the sport they love in college. It is impossible to keep track of them because our lives are busy. And then there is the Transfer Portal. Contact is lost. Until now. Playing on Sports is the only publication that delivers so much information on so many athletes as they compete at the next level. No longer are they “Out of sight, out of mind”.
Every athlete is identified by their name, sport, position, class, high school, college, and collegiate conference.

And Now for the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Athletes
Let’s just start with the All-Americans. Emily Gaebe (Union/Saint Louis Univ.) and Lindsey Heckel (Nerinx Hall/Saint Louis Univ.), respectively earned first and second team USC All-American honors. The best of the best, nationally.
There were 27 named to their all-conference teams, with 15 of those being first team honorees. Again, the best of the best. Amazingly, seven were honored as a Player of the Year in her conference. The best of the best. Yes, a redundancy, but very true. Here are the seven:
Camielle Day - Senior - Goalkeeper - Fort Zumwalt West - Missouri State University - Missouri Valley Conference
Missouri Valley Conference Goalkeeper of the Year
Emily Gaebe - Junior - Forward - Union - St. Louis University - Atlantic-10 Conference
Atlantic-10 Conference Offensive Player of the Year
Lyndsey Heckel - Senior - Defender - Nerinx Hall - St. Louis University - Atlantic-10 Conference
Atlantic-10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year
Megan Hinnenkamp - Freshman - Forward - Liberty North - University of Florida - Southeastern Conference
Southeastern Conference Co-Freshman of the Year
Emily Puricelli - Senior - Goalkeeper - St. Joseph’s Academy - St. Louis University - Atlantic-10 Conference
Atlantic-10 Conference Goalkeeper of the Year
Carly Raunig - Senior - Defender - St. Thomas Aquinas - Missouri State University - Missouri Valley Conference
Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Year
Ava Tankersley - Senior - Defender - Fort Zumwalt South - University of Arkansas - Southeastern Conference
Southeastern Conference Forward of the Year
If some college would recruit athletes who would become the offensive, defensive, and goalkeeper of the year in their conference, they would have a good team. Right? Oh, wait. As shown above, Saint Louis University did just that. They won the Atlantic-10, outscoring their opponents 10-0 in the conference tournament. Their season finally ended in the Sweet Sixteen with a double over time loss to Penn State. The Billikens finished as 11th in the country. It pays to recruit locally.
There were 32 times when one of these athletes were named the conference Player of the Week. That includes Emily Gaebe (Union/Saint Louis Univ.) who also was a National Player of the Week.
While this is certainly a group of talented and hard working athletes who are at the top of their sport, this looks more like a trend than a “really good year”. There were nine freshmen who were named to their all-conference Freshman/Rookie/Newcomer Team. They are:
Taylor Babb - Freshman - Defender - Ladue Horton Watkins - Southern Illinois Univ.-Edwardsville - Ohio Valley Conference
Alyssa Bockius - Freshman - Midfielder - Lindbergh - Saint Louis University - Atlantic-10 Conference
Maddie Bowman - Freshman - Forward - St. Joseph’s Academy - Dayton University - Atlantic-10 Conference
Jasmyn Brown - Freshman - Defender - Andover Central - Univ. of Nebraska-Omaha - Summit League
Audrey Goodyear - Freshman - Defender - Parkway South - Ball State University - Mid-American Conference
Reilly Heman - Freshman - Midfielder - Glendale - Missouri State University - Missouri Valley Conference
Megan Hinnenkamp - Freshman - Forward - Liberty North - University of Florida - Southeastern Conference
Justi Nelson - Freshman - Midfielder - Jackson - Southeast Missouri State Univ. - Ohio Valley Conference
Laudan Wilson - Freshman - Midfielder - Osawatomie - Oklahoma State University - Big 12 Conference
With nine players, that is almost a complete starting line-up. And one where everyone has three years remaining in their collegiate career. These are the soccer athletes we will be hearing about again and again in the coming years.
These athletes ranked in the Top Five of their conference statistics 52 times, 21 of which were No.1. Three ranked in the Top 10 nationally, led by Camielle Day (Fort Zumwalt West/Missouri State) with a .452 Goals Against Average, tops in the country.

The Classroom
When these athletes aren’t excelling on the field, they are doing so in the classroom. The CSC is the national gold standard when recognizing the combining of athletic and academic performance. The CSC named Lindsey Heckel (Nerinx Hall/Saint Louis Univ.) a Second Team Academic All-American.
Additionally, 32 of these athletes were named Academic All-District by the CSC.
What the Coaches Have to Say
Other than family and close friends, who might know these athletes better than anyone else? I suggest their collegiate coach. I asked some of the coaches what they thought about their athlete. Their words are formed by their experience that started with recruiting and followed through to performance on and off the field. Read what coaches had to say throughout the highlights below.

“I have been a Head Coach for 21 years and Samantha is truly a one-of-a-kind individual. She is a caring, selfless, fully invested person who truly didn’t waste a day not investing in the process to grow and develop as a person, student, or soccer player. She committed the energy needed to accomplish her goals and fulfill her dreams, every day in Iowa City. Many people talk about becoming better every day in all the areas needed to grow as a student athlete, but rest assured most don’t invest the time and effort to do so. Sam did and was coachable and open to feedback, both constructive and positive during that journey. Samantha succeeds in all that she puts her mind to and does so while being a role model to young women, leader, and mentor to her peers and an inspiring young adult, who will be successful in whatever path she chooses in the future.”

While her season and career goals and assists are impressive, it is really the intrinsic value she gave to the team by being on the field all four years. You knew with her on the field we always had a chance to score and break a game open. She left a big footprint and will be missed.”
