It's a Wrap! Men's Soccer-NCAA Division I
The conference awards are in. As are the district and national honors. All of that plus every statistic for every Missouri and Kansas athlete who competed this year in NCAA Division I MSOC.
What is Playing On Sports?
Playing On Sports covers the graduates of 1,000 high schools located in Kansas and Missouri who compete in 11 sports in any of the 1,100 NCAA Division I, II, or III colleges and universities.
Our best athletes go on to play the sport they love in college. It is impossible to keep track of them because our lives are busy. And then there is the Transfer Portal. Contact is lost. Until now. Playing on Sports is the only publication that delivers so much information on so many athletes as they compete at the next level. No longer are they “Out of sight, out of mind”.
Every athlete is identified by their name, sport, position, class, high school, college, and collegiate conference.

And Now for the NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Athletes
There are fewer area athletes who compete in Men’s Soccer than those who compete in Women’s Soccer for a simple reason. There are fewer soccer programs available to men than there are to women. But, that doesn’t mean that there aren’t some stellar performances in Men’s Soccer. Because there are. And they detailed right here!
There are 19 of the 103 soccer athletes who have earned honors or achieved performance levels that resulted in their selection to be highlighted below. Twelve of them were named to an all-conference team. Half of those were named to the First Team. There were 31 times that one of these athletes was his conference’s Player of the Week.
There are 31 instances where one of these athletes finished in the Top Five of a conference statistic. Sam Gomez (Webster Groves/Southern Illinois Univ.-Edwardsville) also finished No. 5 in the nation in Shutouts and his .844 Save Percentage was the 6th best nationally. That easily made Sam his conference’s Goalkeeper of the Year. You won’t want to miss what his collegiate coach had to say about his soccer career.

What the Coaches Have to Say
Other than family and close friends, who might know these athletes better than anyone else? I suggest their collegiate coach. I asked some of the coaches what they thought about their athlete. Their words are formed by their experience that started with recruiting and followed through to performance on and off the field. Read what coaches had to say throughout the highlights below.

These Division I Men’s Soccer athletes come from 54 high schools throughout Missouri and Kansas. The high schools with the most graduates competing in NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer are:
Mill Valley - 6
Rockhurst - 6
Blue Valley West - 5
Shawnee Mission East - 5

Jake Ashford - Senior - Defender - Mill Valley - University of Vermont - America East Conference

Jake is a natural born leader and glue guy within a team. On the field he’s a winner. “Sam is a special kid…..He went through a ton of adversity here early dealing with some injuries and a surgery, but always kept pushing forward and became a key leader and captain of our program. His performances this year were a big reason for our team success, with his ability to organize the group in front of him, make key saves, as well as being a massive part of how we built out the back of his distribution. Making the saves yare are supposed to make is a key part of the goalkeeping position and he not only did that but constantly came up with the big save when we needed it. Sam is an incredibly professional kid in terms of mindset and always leads by example with how he trains and prepares. It was great to see Sam get individual recognition this year for his hard work and performances. It was all well deserved.
