The 48 softball pitchers from Missouri and Kansas come from 41 high schools. The only school with more than two is Lee’s Summit North. Those ladies attend 34 colleges. Those colleges are in 14 conferences, including 4 of the Power 5. They are coast to coast from No. 8 Stanford to Coastal Carolina. They ventured South to Jacksonville and to North Dakota, which is about as far North you can play softball, given their late Springs.
Lauren Howell (Helias Catholic/Wichita State) leads the American Athletic Association with 16 wins in her 20 starts. Her ERA is the conference’s fourth best at 2.29 while she limits her opponents to batting .215. Jordan Johnson (Paola/Central Arkansas) also has 16 wins, which is the fourth most in the ASUN Conference. Her 133 K’s lead to her 1.60 ERA, which is second in her conference. Also winning big is sophomore Mac Morgan (Sherwood/Univ. of Texas) where her 16 wins for the 5th ranked Longhorns is the most in the Big 12 Conference.
Easton Seib (Blue Springs South/Valparaiso) is on the Missouri Valley Conference leader board multiple times. She has the 3rd most appearances and starts. The 29 times her opponent looked at a third strike is also the 3rd most in her conference. And showing durability, she has the 5th most innings pitched with 132. Grace Garcia (Blue Valley/Tarleton State) is also all over the Western Athletic Conference leader board. She is 3rd in starts and 4th in appearances. She has the 5th most innings pitched. Her third most strikeouts has led to her getting 11 wins, the 2nd most in the WAC. Also showing durability is Annah Junge (Marquette High/Charleston Southern) Her 176.0 innings pitched is the second most in the Big South Conference. During those innings, she limited her opponents to batting .219, which led to her 2nd conference leading 17 wins.
Commanding ERA’s is a theme among these pitchers. As mentioned above, Lauren Howell’s 2.29 ERA for the Shockers is the 4th best in the American Athletic Conference and Jordan Johnson’s ERA of 1.60 is 2nd best in the ASUN. Also, Clara Edwards (Clay Center/North Dakota Univ.) has the 5th best ERA in the Summit League at 2.60. Alana Vawter (Staley/Stanford Univ.) is dominating the batters in the Pac-12 Conference where her 1.62 ERA is the 4th best. That has helped her to the 2nd most conference wins of 17. She also has the 4th most saves and the 5th most strikeouts.
As good as those performances have been, they are surpassed by a freshman. NiJaree Canady (Topeka High/Stanford Univ.) has been almost unhittable on the mound for the 8th ranked Cardinal. While she has limited her opponents to hitting only .103, her ERA is .29. Yes, .29. That is No. 1 in the nation. Her 8.36 strike out to walk ratio is the 4th best in the country. And remember, she is a freshman.
