NCAA Division II Softball-A Late Season Look
The college Softball seasons are transitioning to the postseason. But first, we take a look at the Division II leaderboards for 11 statistics. All from Missouri and Kansas high schools.
What is Playing On Sports?
Playing On Sports covers the graduates of 1,000 high schools located in Kansas and Missouri who compete in 11 sports in any of the 1,100 NCAA Division I, II, or III colleges and universities.
Our best athletes go on to play the sport they love in college. It is impossible to keep track of them because our lives are busy. And then there is the Transfer Portal. Contact is lost. Until now. Playing on Sports is the only publication that delivers so much information on so many athletes as they compete at the next level. No longer are they “Out of sight, out of mind”.
Every athlete is identified by their name, sport, position, class, high school, college, and collegiate conference.

Highlighting Division II Softball
Last year as a freshman, Karma Fields (Frontenac/Elizabeth City State) led all of Division II with a batting average of .488. She is following that up with a very good .313 sophomore year. This year as a sophomore, Heather Arnett (Frontenac/Pittsburgh State Univ.) is batting .455. That leads the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association and is 17th in all of Division II. Not stopping there, Heather has stolen 51 bases out of 55 attempts. That is the third most in all of Division II. Please note that both of those high level collegiate hitters played on the same Frontenac teams. Their collegiate opponents don’t like seeing them walk to the plate now, and one has to wonder what their high school competition thought on game day. Is there a reader who witnessed those two athletes while on the same high school team? Please let me know with a message to me!
While in high school, the top pitchers are often one of the top batters. That is common in both softball and baseball. What isn’t common is for that combined high level of performance to continue into college. Positions become more specialized. Pitchers pitch, and field positions field and bat. But there are exceptions. One great exception is Jaycee Ginter (Shawnee Heights/Washburn Univ.). The senior never rests. She leads Washburn with a .403 batting average. She also leads her team in hits, triples, home runs, RBI, and total bases. I suspect all of that led her to also lead the Ichabods in times walked, and hit by a pitch. Jaycee was just as proficient from the pitching rubber. Her 2.10 ERA leads to her 17 wins vs 7 losses. And her 158 strikeouts are more than four times the batters she has walked.
There are many more top athletes detailed below and on the attached spreadsheets. A few of the best are:
Batters:
Lillie Filger (Kearney/Northwest Missouri State)
Alexis Dial (Shawnee Heights/Emporia State)
Hannah Burnett (Independence/Pittsburg State)
Sophie Luetticke (Chillicothe/Drury University)

Sadie Walker (Knob Noster/Univ. of Central Missouri)
Ellie Quaethem (Washington-MO/McKendree University)
