So, let’s take an early look at the 83 area women playing basketball in Division III of the NCAA.
There are 83 area women competing at DIII colleges. They come from 81 high schools. Branson is the only high school with more than one. There are three former Pirates who made the three hour drive to Conway, Arkansas to become Hendrix University Warriors. Even after just a few games, 75 of those ladies have already gotten onto the collegiate court. And 61 of them have scored. I grew up in a very small town. That is why I always appreciate the success of those who come from the smallest schools and burgs They prove every year that if you want it, and work at it, you can get where you want to go from whereever you are. Three games into her senior season Kristin Herndon (North Nodaway/Knox College) leads the Prairie Fire with 17.3 pts per game. She also leads her team with 9.5 rebounds and 5.0 blocks per game. North Nodaway is a school with 47 students. You can find North Nodaway in Hopkins, Missouri, population 532.
When I review lists of basketball statistics I always look to see who shoots the most free throws. That one stat tells me a lot about that player. Why do they get fouled so much? Because the defense wants to stop them from what they are doing. The defense wouldn’t do that if they weren’t doing good things. It also tells me a lot about the agressiveness of the player. That is how the game is meant to be played. Sameera Elmasri (Mill Valley/Birmingham Southern), Victoria Perry (Waynesville/North Park University), and Savanna Powell-Goodman (Republic/Greenville University) have each gotten to the line at least 30 times in this young season. Peyton Starks (John Burroughs/Macalester) has the early scoring lead. The sophomore is averaging 18.4 pts per game. Avylina Powell-Qualo (Republic/Westminster) is off to a hot shooting start making 14 out of 18 from the field, for 78%. Who is the early scoring among the freshmen? That is Ariana Williams (Gateway Legacy Christian Academy/Principia College). Ariana is scoring 13.0 points per game.
