NCAA Division II Volleyball is Easy to Dig
Volleyball is volleyball. That is true. However, some play the game much better than others. And many of those have hometowns in Missouri and Kansas. How many are in DII? There are 262. That is a lot.
It is becoming well established that the Missouri/Kansas region produces outstanding women’s volleyball talent well above what the demographics would project. Earlier, we saw how 180 Missouri and Kansas Volleyball athletes are making a mark in Division I. You can read that article here. We now take a look at the 262 area Volleyball athletes who call Division II home. If you don’t have your free subscription to Playing On Sports, get it now. At the end of this article is a link to a spreadsheet that contains 15 offensive and 13 defensive statistics for each of the 262 volleyball athletes, along with their demographic information. You won’t want to miss that! It is an amazing list.
Are all of these ladies competing for the in-state Division II schools? Of course local talent is strewn all across those local rosters. But, these ladies have also fanned throughout the country. You can play volleyball in a any climate. Just ask Leilani Elder (Bishop Miege/Alaska-Anchorage) and Kristina Head (Lyons/Alaska-Fairbanks). As junior middle blockers, both are starting nearly every match in the 49th state.
Stretching about as far to the Southeast from those chilly climes as one can go, are nine Midwest athletes playing volleyball in the Sunshine State League. All of those playing in Florida are underclassmen and most are getting a lot of court time. Examples are Lana Gerard (St. Joseph’s Academy/Rollins College) and Jadyn Troutman (Wellsville/Rollins College). Both have started each of the Tars’ 22 matches.
One of the most outstanding performances so far this year is by Caitlin Bishop (Lansing/Univ. of Missouri-St. Louis), whose 12.20 assists per set is the second most in all of Division II. And Caitlin is just a sophomore. She isn’t the only underclassman turning up big. Shaye Koski (Park Hill/Univ. of Texas-Tyler), is a freshman who has the most kills per set of our athletes in Division II. She also has the second most points per set.
Other freshmen turning in a Top Ten season thus far are:
Holly Heldt (Hermann/Missouri Western) - Both Points per Set and Kills per Set
Brailee Bogle (Wichita Northwest/Emporia State) - Assists per Set
Lauren Tyler (Logan-Rogersville/Drury) - Assists per Set
Taylor Rottinghuas (Shawnee Heights/Washburn Univ.) - Digs per Set
Ali Olson (Bishop Miege/Rockhurst) - Blocks per Set
Mia Berg (Eureka-MO/Nebraska-Kearney) - Blocks per Set
