Mo/Kan High School Running Backs in the NCAA Through 10-8-2022
Here are all 207 Missouri and Kansas high schools graduates who are running backs or quarterbacks on NCAA teams. There are 100 who have carried the ball so far this season.
This newsletter ranks the Mo/Kan high school players on NCAA rosters by net rushing yards per game. Included are running backs, fullbacks, and quarterbacks. I will comment on individual athletes in future editions. This edition will describe who these guys are, where they came from, and where they are now. And, with the advent of the transfer portal, they may not be where you thought they were.
As the attached spreadsheet below shows, there are 207 graduates of Missouri and Kansas high schools living their dream by being ready to carry the ball when their number is called. There are 15 who are the leading rushers for their team, led by Isaiah Davis (Joplin 2020) with 104.3 yards per game through the first six games of the season. More on Joplin, later! Interestingly, all three NCAA divisions are represented by the top three rushers on the list. Of the 207 players, 67 are competing in Division I, 104 in Division II, and 36 in Division III.
As is expected, there are fewer players as they progress through their four years of eligibility. This list has 94 freshmen and only 19 seniors. What an accomplishment for those 19 who weathered the 80% attrition rate.
There are 145 high schools in the bi-state area that have offensive backs in the NCAA. St. Louis University High, Rock Bridge, and Christian Brothers lead with five each. The offensive backs from this region are on the rosters of 69 NCAA colleges. The colleges with the most are Westminster College and Truman State University with 11 each.
And now back to Joplin. The top two rushers in this region are both from Joplin High. Leading in yards per game, as noted above, is Isaiah Davis, Joplin 2020. His 104.3 yds/game leads Division I South Dakota State University. The second leading rusher from this region is also from Joplin. Nathan Glades, Joplin 2021, leads Missouri Southern State University with 92.2 yds/game. When can we start calling Joplin Running Back High?
