NCAA receivers who went to high school in this two state region continue to catch lots of balls as they compete in college. There are 15 who lead their collegiate team in reception yards per game. And they come in big chunks. There are 22 who have caught at least one pass for 50 yards or more. The leaders of this list lean a bit more to seniors than the passing and rushing lists, however two of the top three are sophomores. They have a lot more receiving yards left in their careers.
The leadership in this category was strengthend when James Letcher, Jr. (Piper/Washburn) caught 8 balls for 129 yards. None went for a touchdown, but James still is in a tie with 7 touchdown receptions. He is tied with Ntense Obono (Lawrence/Carleton) and Peter Afful (Lawrence/Washburn). It is clear that the Chesty Lions like the end zone! And speaking of Peter, his 66 receiving yard average would lead many teams. But, not when he is breaking the Washburn huddle with James Letcher, Jr.
Arkell Smith’s (Carthage/Central Missouri) big Saturday moved him into 9th place with a team leading 57.71 receiving yards per game. The redshirt junior caught 8 balls for 102 yards and a touchdown His third quarter touchdown put the Mules in the lead to stay as they would eventually edge out Missouri Southern 20 to 17.
Corey Thomas (Topeka High/Emporia State) also had a big game with 7 receptions for 110 yards, and 1 touchdown in Emporia State’s 44 to 21 win over Nebraska-Kearney. Nebraska-Kearney drew first blood with a touchdown at the first quarter 8:50 mark. Just 34 seconds later, Corey scored for Emporias State with a 65 yards reception. In football, it is important to answer. And answer, Corey certainly did. The game didn’t end until JerQon Conners (Webster Groves/Nebraska-Kearney) ended the scoring with a 19 yard TD reception for the Lopers.
Laterrion West (Orchard Farm/Greenville University) will remember October 15, 2022. The freshman caught his first collegiate pass. He ended the day with two receptions for six yards. It is the start to a long career. And he did that on Homecoming. Yeah, he will remember that game. And he should.
