This week saw some strong passing performances by quarterbacks from this two state region. There are now four who are averaging more than 25 yards per game. And the qb’s are young. The top two are both sophomores and there is only one senior in the top eleven. The freshman with the most passing yards is Bryson Brown (Hazelwood Central/Illinois College) who has averaged 81.00 passing yards in his three appearances. The largest TV viewing audience was garnered by Graham Mertz (Blue Valley North/Wisconsin). Graham completed 14 of 24 passes for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns in the Badger’s six point loss at Michigan State in a Big Ten match-up.
Kellen Simoncic (Smithville/Washburn) strengthened his lead with a strong performance in Washburn’s close loss at Northwest Missouri State. He completed 26 of 40 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns. Kellen is the leader on this list in passing yards, touchdown passes, and passing yards per game. He now has 22 touchdown passes with only 5 interceptions.
Tionne Harris (Vianney/Quincy University) had a game on Saturday that earned him Great Lakes Valley Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this season. Tionne led his team to a thrilling 63 to 62 victory over McKendree with his 35 completions out of 50 attempts. He passed for 469 yards and 3 touchdowns. Those yards are the second most in a game in Quincy history. His 35 completions for the game ties him for fourth all time. With four games remaining in the regular season, the Vianney grad is on pace for the second most yards in a season. And he is now tied for fourth in career yards and is fifth with his 372 career completions. And he is just a junior! Stay tuned to see where his career takes him.
Your first achievement is always memorable. Perhaps more in sports than in many areas. As a true freshman, Nicholas Sanford (Christ Prep/Greenville University) passed for his first intercollegiate career TD pass. He connected with Jabree Brown for 22 yards with 10:35 left in the second quarter to boost Greenville’s lead to 14 to 0. In a backup role, Nicholas completed 6 of his 9 passes for 93 yards leading to his first touchdown pass.
