Mo/Kan High School QB's in the NCAA
Check out the performance of all 70 Missouri and Kansas high school grads who are on NCAA rosters. Who do you know on the list?
This newsletter highlights the quarterbacks in the three NCAA divisions who graduated from a Missouri or Kansas high school. I reside in Kansas City, so it is impossible to only look at one side of the state line. I will comment on individual athletes in future editions. This edition will describe who these guys are, where they came from, and where they are now.
As the table below will show, there are 70 NCAA quarterbacks from Mo/Kan high schools. Before I get to some interesting demographics, I will touch on some production highlights. Eleven of the 70 qb’s lead their team in passing. Those who lead their teams in passing yards per game are completing over 60% of their passes and have 2.3 touchdown passes for every interception. Those are good numbers regardless of level of play.
There are a lot of interesting demographics. One that stands out to me is the attrition rate. There will always be those who choose to not continue with the sport. Practice isn’t always fun when there is no reward on Saturday. I hope those who choose to stop playing feel a satisfaction for having pursued their dream. It’s a once on a lifetime opportunity, and they went for it. Good for them. Playing time is more of a factor with the quarterback position than most others because there is only one, and there is never a regular substitution pattern. You are either playing, or you are not. That leads to a steady attrition over the years. That is demonstrated with this table. Including redshirts, there are 39 freshmen, 16 sophomores, 10 juniors, and 5 seniors. At that rate, 87% of the freshmen quarterbacks won’t see their senior year on the team. That is brutal. But, that reminds me of a saying that if it was easy, then everyone would be doing it. Seeing it to your senior year in college sports is hard.
The 70 quarterbacks come from 65 high schools. The high schools with two grads currently on NCAA rosters are Blue Valley North, Christian Brothers, Rock Bridge, Salina Central, and William Chrisman.
Mo/Kan high school quarterbacks are on the rosters of 42 different colleges. The skew is to the larger colleges with 20 DI schools, 15 DII schools, and 7 DIII schools. There are more DIII schools than either DI or DII schools. There just aren’t very many here in the Midwest where DII schools dominate.
The high schools are urban, suburban, and rural. Schools as large as Blue Springs South, and as small as Ell-Saline in Brookville, Kansas. Schools of all sizes produce NCAA quarterbacks.
