Local Ladies Getting it Done in NCAA DIII Women's Basketball
The Missouri and Kansas grads who are playing their college basketball at DIII schools are making big names for themselves. Scoring, rebounding, and taking care of the ball. Take a look.
There are 83 women from Missouri and Kansas high schools who are competing in Women’s Basketball at the NCAA Division III level. And yes, they compete very well. Some stay local and some travel afar. But, they compete whereever they land.
The leading scorer from this area at this juncture is Annette Ramirez (Sarcoxie/Westminster MO) who leads her team with 20.4 points/game. She is one of eight who leads her team in scoring. She is just a sophomore. But that is part of the theme. The top five scorers include one junior, two sophomores, and two freshmen. There is only one senior in the top eight scorers. Sophomore Peyton Starks (John Burroughs/Macalester) is the second leading scorer with 17.9 poings per game while Madison Nelson (Kingston/Fontbonne Univ.) is the top freshman scorer with 15.9 per game.
Owning the glass is Claudia Cooke (Parkway Central/Kenyon College) with 9.6 rebounds per game to go along with her team leading 12.7 points per contest. Claudia’s game is efficient as she hits 48% from the field and 82% from the charity stripe. While near the defensive board she is also blocking 1.35 shots per game.
Speaking of blocks, the leader from this area is Natalie Bruns (Kirkwood/New York Univ.). She has rejected 44 of her opponents’ shots, or 2.93 per game. Natalie is also averaging 2.00 steals and 2.87 assists per game. She dishes out 1.48 assists for every turnover she commits. And to show how well rounded of a player she is, she also leads the Violets with 14.5 points per game. And to further state how well rounded she is, yes, I did say she is competing at New York University.
Leading the way from the free throw line is Shelby Kurtz (Camdenton/Westminster MO) who is shooting at an 83.78% clip. Dishing it out as a freshman is Taylor Brown (Lift for Life Academy/Principia College) who has 3.93 assists/game to go along with her 14.7 points/game. Sameera Elmasri (Mill Valley/Birmingham Southern College) is just a sophomore, but she leads with 3.06 steals per game. That is despite coming off the bench to average just 16.2 minutes per game. That is Top 50 steals per game throughout the country. The NCAA should also list steals per minute played. I think I just might know who would lead that list.
