This is an impressive group of athletes at impressive schools. Most who rank high are seasoned veterans. Seniors and Graduate Students. However, there are some exceptions. Among those getting it done early in her collegiate career is Maeve Fogarty (Visitation Academy/Univ. of Rochester), who as a sophomore leads this group in goals scored. Ranking high in goals and/or assists are Maeve, Tia Sansone (Whitfield Academy/Maryville Univ.-MO), and Delanie Winkelmann (St. Joseph’s Academy/Maryville Univ.-MO), all who are sophomores. As a freshman, Calista Crocker (Lindbergh/Maryville Univ.-MO) has the third best shots on goal percentage in this group. Establishing herself early in goal is a sophomore, Liz Bierhals (Whitfield Academy/Maryville Univ.-MO). Liz leads this group of goalies in Save Percentage and is second in Goals Against Average.
If you missed the first Field Hockey article, you can access it here. You will find data and summaries about all but two area athletes who play field hockey in the NCAA. Those two who were missing, have now been added to the database for future reporting.

Many of these athletes also play for some of the best field hockey teams in the land. And I mean play. As in starting and playing significant minutes. Just take a look. The national rankings are provided weekly by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
NCAA Division I
Grace Pottebaum - Sophomore - John Burroughs - North Carolina - Atlantic Coast Conference
The 10 and 2 Tar Heels are ranked No. 3. Grace has started two games and is averaging over 40 minutes per contest. Her sister, Esther, is a freshman midfielder on the Stanford Cardinal Field Hockey team. Having daughters playing field hockey on both coasts would be a good problem to have!
Mia Duchars - Senior - MICDS - Louisville - Atlantic Coast Conference
The 12 and 2 Cardinals are ranked No. 5. Mia has started 12 of 14 games, averaging over 40 minutes per game. She has three assists.
Taryn Tkachuk - Junior - Villa Duchesne - University of Virginia - Atlantic Coast Conference
The 8 and 5 Cavaliers are ranked No. 8. Taryn has started 8 of 12 games, averaging 27 minutes per contest. Six of her seven shots have been on goal. Taryn has three goals, one of them a game winner.
Kate Oliver - Sophomore - MICDS - Harvard University - Ivy League
The 9 and 3 Crimson is ranked No. 11. Kate has started 11 of 12 games, averaging over 30 minutes of playing time per game. Four of her seven shots have been on goal. She has two assists.
NCAA Division III
Ellie Hughes - Junior - Pembroke Hill - Middlebury College - New England Small Collage Athletic Conference
The 11 and 0 Panthers are ranked No. 1. Ellie has known little other than winning since her arrival at Middlebury. Two years ago she played in 14 games, scoring a goal and recording an assist, as her Panthers ran the table for a National Championship. Last year, Ellie scored two goals in the 15 contests in which she played. Middlebury suffered a rare loss, but still won the National Championship. This year, as a junior, Ellie has started all 11 games. Her Panthers are undefeated and ranked No. 1. Yes, that is a record of 54 wins, 1 loss, and two National Championships for the former Raider. Certainly, there is more to come.
Jane Shanahan - Senior - John Burroughs - Bowdoin College - New England Small College Athletic Conference
The 9 and 3 Polar Bears are ranked No. 12. Jane has played in 11 games, starting 4 of those contests. She is averaging over 30 minutes per game. The midfielder has taken two shots, one of them on goal.
Kate Smith - Junior - John Burroughs - Amherst College - New England Small College Athletic Conference
The 7 and 5 Mammoths are ranked No. 14. Kate has started all 12 games and is averaging almost 60 minutes per contest. In other words, Amherst needs her. One reason they need her is her amazing Shots on Goal percentage of .917.
