Area Women Competing in NCAA Division I Women's Basketball. Updated Numbers.
Midseason sees players settling into their roles on their teams as they begin the push to the postseason. The grads from MO and KS high schools are putting up some impressive numbers.
Local ladies continue to perform very well as NCAA Division I basketball players. They score. They rebound. They score and rebound. And they flat out play the game as it is meant to be played. There are well over a hundred area grads competing in DI. They can be found throughout the rosters of the local DI schools such as Kansas State, Kansas, Missouri, Wichita State, and all of the other local schools. But, they have also spread out in all directions. To the East at places such as Duke and George Mason. To the West at such places as Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo and Pepperdine. To Northern locations such as Buffalo and Wisconsin. And New Orleans and Texas A & M-Corpus Christi to the South. Being on an island is technically off of the continent, isn’t it? Texas A & M-Corpus Christi are named the Islanders for a reason. However, there is no dispute that home games for Jacque David (William Chrisman/Univ. of Hawaii) plays her home games off of the continent. So, our ladies are everywhere, doing everything.
E’Lease Stafford (Lawrence/Missouri-Kansas City) and Sanna’ St. Andre (Rock Bridge/Missouri-Kansas City) continue to be the top scorers from this area with 17.4 and 16.3 points/game, respectively. Fortunately, they were able to get past any Border War animosity to lead their fellow Kangaroo teammates. It doesn’t matter the size of school from which you come. We see that when we know Hayley Frank (Strafford/Univ. of Missouri) leads her Tigers, just as Aiyana Johnson (Lee’s Summit North/Stephen F. Austin) leads her Ladyjacks. In all, you will find seven local ladies who lead their DI team in scoring.
I mentioned that these lades score AND rebound. A good example is Alecia Westbrook (Park Hill/Texas A & M-Corpus Christi) who leads her Islanders both in scoring (11.5 pts/game) and rebounds (10.1 rebounds/game. Yes, she averages a double/double.
Two small town ladies show how not only to help teammates score, but to not risk possession in doing so. I am talking about lots of assists with a high assist to turnover ratio. Emily Ryan (Central Plains/Iowa State) and Serena Sundell (Maryville/Kansas State) transitioned easily to larger places to play basketball. Emily averages 6.72 assists per game (First in her conference and 10th nationally) while maintaining an assist/turnover ratio of 2.24. Serena isn’t far behind with 5.10 assists/game which is 1.88 times her turnovers. Serena has 10,662 fellow hometown citizens while Emily has 561.
When it comes to steals, no one is doing it better right now than Kiyley Flowers (Barstow/Southeast Missouri State) who is averaging 2.76 steals per game. However, when it comes to household thieverly, the would be the Glenn sisters. Jaelyn Glenn (Barstow/Kansas State) and Brylee Glenn (Barstow/Kansas State) combine for 4.24 steals per game. Did you notice what all three have in common? Yes, they are all graduates of The Barstow School. Perhaps that deserves a follow up article. You think?
