Area Men in NCAA DIII Basketball-The Names and Numbers
There are 96 area men playing NCAA Division III basketball. See who they are and what all they are doing.
These guys come from small towns, the suburbs, urban areas, everywhere. They go to play in small towns and large cities. Sometimes from a small town to the city, and sometimes from the city to a small town. But, always for the same purpose. To pursue their passion for basketball during their college years. Let’s take a look at how they are doing.
Travis Lien (Kirkwood/Franciscan Univ. of Steubenville) leads this area in DIII scoring with a team leading 20.8 pts/game. Also leading their team in scoring is Jaxon Althaus (Oak Grove/Westminster (MO) with 17.9, Noah Butler (Free State/Aurora) with 15.8, and Jake Kampf (Barat Academy/Principia College) with 14.4 pts/game. More on Jake in a moment. The leading scoring freshman is Joe Berry (St. Thomas More/Univ. of Chicago) who is scoring at a 9.3 pts/game clip through the first nine games of his collegiate career. Joe hails from Hays. It’s not tiny, and it is itself a college town. But, it does provide a contrast with an urban campus in Chicago. Joe seems to be embarking on a top flight basketball career at a top flight academic institution. Getting into the University of Chicago to be a Maroon is much more difficult than competing as a Maroon after you are admitted. Congratulations to Joe for achieving both.
Ok, now back to Jake Kampf. Jake has only shot 75 shots in his 9 games. But, he found out how you can be the fourth highest scorer. Just make most of your shots. That’s all. It’s that easy. Jake has made 32 of the 55 shots he has taken from beyond the arc. That is 58% from 3-Pt range. That is 8th in the nation. He is 7 for 20 from inside the arc, which makes one wonder why he ventures inside the three point line! He is also 20 for 21 from the free throw line, or 95%. And that is 3rd in the nation in DIII. But, we all know that basketball is more than just shooting. You have to pass the ball, too. Jake knows that. His 2.5/1 assist to turnover ratio is the highest for any local grad playing in DIII.
I also want to highlight Demarcus Bond (St. Louis Univ. High/Millikin Univ.) who leads the area grads with 4.0 assists per game. Karl Moore, Jr. (Jennings/Webster Univ.) is getting it done in the paint. He leads the area with 9.1 rebounds per game and is 10th in the nation with 3.0 blocks per game.
Here are the numbers for all the men from Kansas and Missouri who playing NCAA Division III basketball:
