Area Grads Competing in NCAA Football as of 11/12-2022. The Numbers.
Updated YTD numbers and commentary on the Kansas and Missouri grads competing in the NCAA. Check out the commentary, the leaders, and the complete list.
Each week I highlight the collegiate football exploits produced by players from Missouri and Kansas. There are always highlights to put forth. We are also going down the final stretch of the season. A fun thing is that there isn’t a clear season leader in any of the three categories; Passing, Rushing, Receiving.
Last week I led with Devin Neal (Lawrence/Kansas) with his 229 rushing yards against Oklahoma State. No one expected him to match that number, but he checked in with another huge game. His 190 rushing yards against Texas Tech on Saturday propelled him into the season lead with 95.1 yards per game, less than 2 yards ahead of Isaiah Davis (Joplin/South Dakota State). Yes, the top two rushers from Missouri and Kansas high schools are both competing in Division I. Travis Theis (Pratt/South Dakota) rushed for 95 yards in only 14 carries in their loss to rival North Dakota. The sophomore now averages 76 yards per game. Jack Lowery (Liberty/Colorado School of Mines) had just 12 rushing yards coming into Saturday’s game. The 9 and 2 Miners 80-0 pounding of Fort Lewis gave Jack the opportunity to get on the field. He responded with 59 yards on 8 carries with 2 TD’s. That is a nice reward for all of those practices. Damon Bonds (Chaminade/Lake Forest) matched his season average with 84 rushing yards. Those came on 13 rushes and resulted in a TD. That TD came from 60 yards out in the first quarter. Those 6 points was the margin of victory for the Foresters 13 to 7 win of the University of Chicago.

In his second game back after being out with an injury, Brett Gabbert (Christian Brothers/Miami-Ohio) showed he was back in form. Brett passed for 244 yards and 3 TD’s with his 20 of 26 passing. But, it wasn’t enough as the Redhawks fell to Ohio, 37 to 21. And just like Jack Lowery with his rushing noted above, Evan Foster (Christian Brothers/Colorado School of Mines) took advantage of the lopsided score to score some playing time for himself. Evan responded with 6 for 6 passing for 60 yards and a TD. Well into a challenging season for his team, Peyton Byerly (Cabool/Westminster (M0) ) turned in his best performance of the season. Peyton completed 15 of 28 passes for 210 yards and 3 TD’s. People who know me know that I like “firsts”. As a Freshman, Patrick Heitert (Christian Brothers/Southeast Missouri State) got on the field for the first time of his collegiate career. Patrick responded by completing 11 of his 17 passes for 140 yards.

Jaylin Noel (Park Hill/Iowa State) continues with his fine sophomore season. The Cyclone’s second leading receiver caught 7 balls on Saturday for 86 yards. Ntense Obono (Lawrence/Carleton) finished his sophomore season in good fashion. The former Chesty Lion caught 10 balls for 92 yards. And with another “first”, Ryan Dewhirst (Rock Port/Northwest Missouri State) caught his for two balls, one for a TD for the Bearcats.
